We’ll have at least a couple of soldering activities to choose from. This is what we made last year:
Blinky LED – Beginner Level – Soldering one end of an LED to a coin battery holder and bending the other end of the LED in a way that you can tap it against the other side of the battery holder to make it blink. It teaches about polarity in components, tinning, and joining components with solder.
Buzz Bot – Intermediate Level – In this activity, we use the same coin battery base, but solder a small rumble motor (like what’s used in a cell phone) to it and hot glue either some tooth brush heads to it or make legs out of wire. When the battery is added, the rumbling causes the device to scoot around smooth surfaces. The little bot can then be decorated with googley eyes and pom poms and other crafty things.
Of course, we’re open to there ideas here. It just needs to be something we can source parts for cheaply and those parts be large enough for beginners to work with.
